Esthetic medicine: what you need to know!!

Esthetic medicine, do you want to take the plunge?

Definition: What is esthetic medicine exactly?

Esthetic medicine is a set of non-invasive medical procedures that do not require skin incisions. Its goal is to improve/correct the physical appearance of patients.

Aesthetic medicine procedures are performed by medical professionals in a doctor's office and enable to obtain natural and reversible results. These procedures are less heavy than those performed in plastic surgery.

There are different techniques depending on the area and the patient's needs, which can be combined to optimize results. Among the most popular are hyaluronic acid injections, vitamin-based revitalization injections, peels, cryolipolysis, laser, etc.

Be careful, aesthetic medicine cannot be improvised! Who can practice it? What is the required experience to be able to practice it?

The esthetic doctor improves the physical appearance of his patients in order to fade and delay the effects of aging. They perform medical procedures such as botox injections, peels, permanent laser hair removal, etc.

An esthetic doctor has skills in different fields such as dermatology, mesotherapy, endocrinology, psychology, etc. He can therefore treat wrinkles, scars, pigment spots and also intervene with people willing to remove a tattoo.

Anyone with a medical degree can train in esthetic medicine. However, the majority of esthetic doctors come from dermatology, plastic surgery, face and neck surgery or general medicine.

After obtaining a PhD, they can access one of these specialties:

the inter-university diploma of morphological and anti-aging medicine

-the university diploma in aesthetic dermatology and cosmetology

-a private post-graduate course to obtain a private diploma recognized by the International Union of Aesthetic Medicine

In France, the Conseil National de l'Ordre de Médecins (British Medical Association / American Medical Association) recognizes aesthetic medicine as a specialization of general medicine. Moreover, a person practicing aesthetic medicine must be registered on the board of the Order, be authorized to practice on French territory and justify a specific training.

  • Hyaluronic acid injections: lip volume increase, wrinkle filling, skin hydration
  • Botulinum toxin injections: smoothing the skin, preventing and treating wrinkles
  • Mesotherapy: micro-injection on the surface layer

Do not mistake hyaluronic acid for botulinum toxin (Botox): Botox treats the cause of aging and hyaluronic acid treats the consequences. Their effectiveness can therefore be complementary.
