Botox and its beauty secrets

Botulinum toxin or Botox, definition

Botulinum toxin, also known as Botox, is a substance that temporarily reduces muscle contraction by acting at the neuromuscular junction (muscle relaxing action). It is therefore, basically, a medical treatment used to treat muscle contractions, especially of the eyelids.

In France, the first marketing authorizations appeared around 1990 for certain pathological indications (ophthalmology, ENT, functional rehabilitation, neurology).

The principle of botulinum toxin consists in using the muscle relaxation properties of the product.

There are precisely 7 different types of botulinum toxin. Only the subtypes of botulinum toxin A and B are used in therapy.

Subtype A is the one used in Botox and considered the most effective in humans.

It is not a filler like hyaluronic acid. As a reminder, Botox and hyaluronic acid are two complementary treatments. One does not replace the other.

Botox: Who is allowed to inject it?

Ophthalmologists, neurologists and face and neck surgeons (ENT or maxillofacial) can only inject Botox in the face. Other medical specialties do not have the competence to do so, and therefore cannot perform them.

A precise knowledge of anatomy and an aesthetic sense are two essential qualities for the practice of Botox injection.

Botox: Post-injection results

  • Time to obtain the result: the results are visible after a few days
  • Duration of the result: the effect lasts an average of 4 to 6 months, after which the Botox injection can be renewed.
  • From the second injection, the results can be more durable (6 months).
  • Frequency of injections: Botox injections can be performed several times with intervals of 4 to 6 months in order to obtain a stable result. However, it is recommended that the injections never be performed less than 3 months apart.
